MUNY I - George Grey by carvinganish MUNY I - George Grey by carvinganish
MUNY Series

there's really no point trying to take beautiful scenics living in new york during the cold winter. i have been struggling to come up with photographic inspiration, but i finally got an idea. to document the musicians under new york (MUNY).

new yorkers - i would love it if you could give me suggestions if you have a favorite musician under new york :)

this image is the first in the series. george grey - singer, musician and songwriter playing at his favorite 42nd street location.

hope you like it :D
______________
DD: thank you for all the kind words and fav's guys. i know i haven't replied to all the comments but i have made an effort to answer any questions or address any "advanced critiques". thanks again for making my day really great! :boogie:

Given 2005-03-06
Out of the gallery of an unknown but talented photographer is MUNY I - George Grey by *carvinganish. A brilliant capture of a subway musician, the depth and emotion carried in this image is simply wonderful. If I stare at it long enough I can hear the guitar. Be sure to check out the rest of this deviants gallery. ( Featured by Moonbeam13 )

I think i get a sense of the passion the artist has for his music from this photo. The framing and exposure is great in this photo.

that's a truly excellent picture, doing research in 'street musicians' and stumbled across your page, great work with the high contrast and big dark area

like just about everyone else it seems, at a glance it reminded me of bono!

wha, beautiful photo, the darkness of the picture I think really emphasises the overall mood as well as the musicians face and hand - what sort of shutter speed did you use? The lights in the background lift the blackness just enough to add extra depth and keep the photo from a blocked colour. Wonderful, wonderful work.

Loto.

I love this photo. The expression of his face, the way his mouth is opened just a tad from which you can see he is singing. The detail in his face, the reflection in the sunglasses. His hands on the guitar.

You managed to press the trigger on a very good moment and the light is perfect. The way it reflects off his leather coat and making him stand out just a bit from the background is very nicely done. The depth of field is good, so that the background isn't too blurry.

I'm curious, how many shots did you take of this man?

Great photo! :+fav:!

thank you for the detailed appreciation of this piece! haha, although i dont know an exact number, i did take a fair few shots! thanks for noticing the timing in pressing the shutter, but mostly that is chance...i always shoot in continuous mode so that i can get a 3-4 shot burst with the same compo... dramatically increasing the chances of catching the right expression :D

Man this is an awsome picture!!! And your sooo right about the weather here, it's the pitts. You took it with film not digital? Love the light, love the fact that if you hadn't told me it was 42nd I would have never known, love the angle, everything. How many did you take to get this one? Anyway great job!! I'll be watching you!

i took this with digital. i guess the high ISO and the b/w conversion give it a "film" appeal :D i shot this in RAW mode and im pretty sure thats the reason the exif data doesnt show up! i did take a fair few shots from diff angles since he was so friendly...took 3-4 with this comp in continuous mode so i could catch the right expression :D

thanks :w00t:

I like how the lights in the background give it a feel that he's on a stage in front of thousands of people but then you come to find he's in a subway, he still retains the hero quality of a passionate musician. This is my other favorite from this series. Awesome :+fav:

Wow, great capture. For me being a guitarist, it's really inspiring to see other guitarists battling it out in the subways and pavements of Melbourne. Top job!

yeah. i was going to , but i forgot to mention, gibsons go for about 1500$ up. very detailed craftsmanship on one ie seen had a price tag of 50'000$! but i doubt this guy has one. he probably has a less expensive one.
